computer system

I've often been asked what a person should purchase when looking for a new computer system. The obvious response has always been "What do you want to buy a computer for?"

Okay, that's not an answer but an opening to what the purchaser is looking for, what they expect to do and how much they have budgeted. Unless there are special requirements (e.g., high performance sound cards, networks, mass-storage back-up devices, etc, there are many options but the following rules of thumb have applied for many years:

  1. Buy the best you can with the money you've budgeted.
(Don't exceed your budget -- prices WILL keep falling
and you can always upgrade later!)

  2. Additional RAM is the BEST and most cost-effective improvement you can make. (You can always add more later but it's cheaper when purchased with your computer)

  3. Get the largest monitor you can with your system.
(If you can upgrade to a 17in monitor inexpensively, DO IT!
    Your eyes will thank you.)

  4. When doing your comparison shopping, ask the vendor for the options you want but expect to have price adjustments (sometimes in your favour!).

  5. Printers are normally offered as a part of systems — cheap printers!
Know which printers meet your anticipated requirements before you order your system.

Warning!

If you're going to connect to the Internet, be SURE to allot budget for:

  • A GOOD Surge Protector (w/protection for telephone & network lines)
(you've GOT to protect everything that runs copper to your computer)
  • A GOOD Antivirus Program
(I recommend Norton AntiVirus -- keep it up to date!)
  • A GOOD Firewall Program
(I recommend ZoneAlarm -- keep it up to date!)

I can get you these items at a deep discount (except the ZoneAlarm which is FREE!).

Data Koncepts regularly receives system and component offers from distributors. Data Koncepts pass these along to clients and can obtain these systems for you on a cost plus basis.
