Freedom Lost! Freedom!

Digital Photography

"A picture is worth a thousand words ..."

Data Koncepts maintains a 2.6 megabyte digital camera with fantastic capabilities. Instant photographs downloaded directly to the computer! While newer digital cameras offer a greater resolution, they can't match the features on this beauty!

Scanned Images

Photographs are a great way to put the personal touch into a web page — or show a product to a potential customer!

On the left is a scan of a photograph. It was reduced in size to accommodate slower modems (by reducing download time). Web pages full of graphics load VERY SL O  W   L   Y . . .

I've found that photographs of children can be great gifts -- especially as "wallpaper" for a parent's desktop! The kids love it, too!

Digital photographs can be retouched to eliminate minor defects and to overlay effects or combine several images. The collage to the right was created MANY years ago as "wallpaper" for an early ("color challenged") Macintosh computer.

Panoramas (and Banners)

Digital (or scanned) photos offer a unique capability — panoramas. No longer do we have to rely on a special panorama camera as computer programs can be used to "stitch" images together and ensure the seams between the photos is barely detectable.

Panoramas are a great thing to put on banner paper, not just the old "Happy Birthday" written in small text or symbols. Of course, you can add text and other messages on a banner, too!

Screensavers

Collections of photos can also be turned into screensavers. One example is this Warbirds screensaver (1.16Mb in its own installation exe). Two other examples are the screensavers that can be found at Mercury Bay Online! and the New Zealand Carving Unlimited websites.

Drawings/Animated Images

The animated images at the top of these pages were created as a series of images which are tied together via timed controls. To minimize the size of animated images, they MUST be "optimized" (minimizing the colour pallate and retaining only "replacement pixels").

OCR

First, OCR is the acronym for Optical Character Recognition. Okay, equally confusing, I agree! Nevertheless, OCR is the scanning of text and the conversion of the scanned image of the text into text which can be processed by a computer.

OCR is NOT a perfect science. It requires a VERY clear copy, typically white background (for contrast) and large text. Otherwise, nearly as much time is spent checking the poor text recognition as retyping would entail. On the other hand, if a good copy is provided, OCR beats the heck out of retyping! The result is an electronic record which can be manipulated by any of your computer's applications — and can be included in anything from newsletters to web pages!

Acrobat™ (pdf)

This is Adobe's format for document interchange — readable by all types of computers using the free Acrobat Reader. With the differences in the way computers are setup, this is the only way to ensure that your documents are seen as intended. For those with Acrobat, documents are merely "printed" by Acrobat to create the PDF (Portable Document Format) file.

Acrobat is a GREAT way to put your brochure online knowing that it will be seen as it was designed and printed.
